3.59 part c resonance structure?

Postby Noah Carey 1G » Tue May 15, 2018 9:26 pm

I'm confused about resonance structures. In part c of 3.59, should chlorine nitrate ClONO2 have a resonance structure because the double bond with oxygen can be on either O of NO2?

Yes, the best Lewis structure is actually two resonance structures (often considered "the structure") and sometimes abbreviated as just one of the two.

When a question asks to draw out the lewis structure of a molecule that has resonance, do we need to draw all the different resonance structures for it, or just one? Thanks.

From my understanding, we would need to draw all of the resonance structures if asked because we would need to show that (for example) a double bond is not actually only between one pair but is actually spread throughout the molecule.
