7th Edition 2C5.C

Postby Jamie Hsu » Wed Oct 31, 2018 5:23 pm

For 7th edition, chapter 2C number 5C, why is the Lewis structure not a resonance structure if the two oxygens that are attached to the nitrogen are 1 single bond and 1 double bond?

Hello, for this problem I believe resonance structures do not need to be stated because we are trying to find an unpaired electron to know if the species is a radical one or not. Changed around the area of double bond will not result in losing an electron.

^yeah I believe changing around the area of double bond won't result in losing the electron.
