Resonance structures

Postby Ariana Morales » Sun Nov 04, 2018 5:13 pm

Can I get a further explanation the difference between resonance structures and the hybrid structure?

A resonance structure is basically when bonds and electrons can be organized in a variety of combinations. Remember that the actual occurring structure is a mix or blend of the multiple resonance structures, rather than one. But using formal charge, the lowest energy resonance structure factors more into the blended hybrid than the higher, less frequently occurring, resonance structures.

They're a related concept. Molecules with resonance will ultimately form hybrid structures of all the different kinds of bonds they can make.

The actual structure is the resonance hybrid, but we draw out the resonance structure to show the possible positions of the delocalized electrons.

Resonance structures refer to different ways that we can arrange the double bonds in a Lewis structure, so this is where the double sided arrow between the different structures come in. One important thing to keep in mind is that the formation of the atoms must be the same in order for it to be a resonance structure with the other structures. Only the electrons move around, however the formation of the atoms stay the same. A hybrid is simply one structure that showcases all the different way that the double bond can be arranged by using dashed lines.

resonance structures are all of the possible structures, while the hybrid resonance is the average of the resonance structures (the actual structure of the molecule)

On a test would be asked to draw the resonance or hybrid structure?

This is related to each other.
The Resonance would just be all the possible ways to draw the hybrid structure, if the Lewis Dot Structure was a hybrid structure. To draw the hybrid structure would be absolutely crucial to determining if the molecule was a hybridization.
The resonance would just be the question asking, "What are the different resonance structures available in this molecule?" It probably wouldn't tell you that it's a Hybrid, just to test your ability to find and check if hybridization is occurring in the molecule.
The answer to your question is, It depends on what the question is asking you.
If it asks to draw the lewis structure, then perhaps it would be safe to draw the resonance of the molecule for assurance. As a result of drawing the lewis structure, you would find out if your molecule being drawn was Hybrid or not.
