Drawing resonance structures

Postby Rachel-Weisz3C » Sat Nov 10, 2018 2:07 pm

When asked to draw resonance structures, is it necessary to draw all the possible structures or just a few?

you have to draw all the possible resonance structures to show all the possible bond formations

You would need to draw all the possible resonance structures, because resonance is a blend of structures with the same arrangement atoms, but just with different arrangements of electrons.

You'd probably want to draw all of them just to be safe, but there are usually only a few resonance structures for the molecules we're working with.

When they ask for the lewis structures, does that refer to all lowest energy resonance structures?

you have to draw all of the resonance structures to show that you know it can be any of them, but will be an average of them all to have the most stable structure
