Will we ever have to find exact bond length? Or do we just need to know trends and how they all average?

Calculating exact bond lengths probably relies on information we won't learn in Chem 14A, so you will not need to know exact bond lengths. All you really need to know is which ones are longer (single bonds) and which are shorter (triple bonds) and how valence structures have bond length in between the types of bonds used (If there are double and single bonds you need to know that each bond is between the length of the single and double bonds made between the elements in the molecule).

We also need to know that the dissociation energy for longer bonds is lower than the dissociation energy of shorter bonds because they are easier to break.

Does the bond length change depending on where the double bond is in the resonance structures?

Can someone explain bond lengths, I understand the whole single bond is weaker...but what are the most important things for us to know about them?

The bond lengths are the average all the bonds in the resonance structures , so where the double bond is in the resonance structure is already taken into consideration for the average.

when we draw all possible resonance structures are we required to draw the hybrid with the dashed lines? or is it okay to draw the double headed arrow between the different resonance structures?
