Calculating Bond Length

Postby ChelseaMae3D » Sun Nov 11, 2018 4:40 pm

Is there a way to determine the specific Bond length in Resonance structures, or is it expected that we guess based on the given value(s)?

From what I understand we will only be given them, but if they are given we can determine bond lengths for molecules that have resonance. We saw this on the midterm with the length of a regular N-O bond and a double N-O bond. Given those two lengths we can find the length of the bonds in a structure as it will be an average between the given bond lengths.

It would be a guess between the values since we would need instruments to measure the hybrid structure formed by the resonance structures. For example, if a molecule has twos single bonds and 1 double bond it with a single bond length of 100 and a double bond length of 80, you would simply say 90 for an estimation of the hybrid bond length.

Hope that helps.

Just know that triple bonds are shorter than double bonds and double bonds are shorter than single bonds.
