Bond Length

Postby Ashvi_Luthra_4H » Sun Nov 18, 2018 7:21 pm

If resonance structures mean that the bond lengths will be considered the same, then then in what context do we discuss them in? Is it only relevant to molecules in which resonance structures are not present?

im not quite sure what your question is but i believe you are asking about the bond lengths of resonance and non resonance structures? what do you mean by in what context do we discuss them in?

Since resonance structures show a molecule's overall stability, I think it is most relevant when determining where the molecule might be more electron rich or poor, eventually leading into figuring out its molecular shape.

In the context of this course, equal bond lengths in resonance structures is something to be aware of but I am pretty sure we do not need to do much more with the information. However, comparing bond lengths can be useful in determining how electronegative the central atom is because of how tightly it pulls in electrons from the surrounding atoms.

We discuss resonance when discussing the distribution of electron densities in bonds. For example, in benzene, there is resonance, meaning that all of the C-C bonds are the same length and the electrons are delocalized meaning that they are all shared equally among the carbon atoms. Thus, not one C-C bond is larger than any other.
