Bond Lengths

Postby Daisylookinland » Mon Nov 26, 2018 7:41 pm

If you have, for example, SO2, SO3, and SO3^2-, each molecule has a lewis structure with single bonds and one double bond.
If all of them have resonance, how would you determine which bond lengths are longer/shorter in comparison to one another? Are they all the same length?

For example, if molecule X has 2 double bonds and 1 single and molecule Y has 1 double bond and 2 single bonds, Molecule Y is longer because the averages are longer.

When we are asked to draw resonance structures are we supposed to calculate the average bond length?

No because it is obtained experimentally
