what exactly is a resonance structure? is it a molecule that has multiple lewis structures that can be drawn for that molecule...?

Yes, it is when some lewis structures have multiple bonds in different equivalent locations.

Resonance structures are alternate structures of the same molecule so basically yes, your definition is correct.

Yes, resonance structures are molecules that can be drawn in different configurations that still represent the same molecule. The example in class today shows clearly shows the true meaning of a resonance structure.

That's correct. Resonance refers to lewis structure have multiple bonds in different equivalent locations.

Resonance structures are different versions of lewis structures for the same molecule and there are equivalent models.

It's also important to note that the real structure is usually a blend, or an average of all of its resonance structures. So for example, Dr. Lavelle used a nitrate ion, which has 3 resonance structures. But through experimental observation, each N-O bond has the same bond length, meaning that each N-O bond has partial double bond behavior. This is called a resonance hybrid.

i think of resonance structures as alternate Lewis structures but with making sure to emphasize lone pairs?
