Bond lenghts.

Do we need to know how to find bond lengths, other than that double bonds are shorter and single bonds are longer?

I don't believe that we have to know how to find specific bond lengths. We just have to understand the differences in lengths of double and single bonds. Bond lengths within molecules with resonance must also be considered. The bond lengths in molecules with resonance are more like an "average" of the bond lengths of all the resonance structures of a molecule.

Dr. Lavelle didn't mention us needing to know bond lengths. We just need to understand that the length of a single bond will not be equal to that of a double bond, and that resonance will portray that blending of structures with said bonds.

I don't think we have to know how to find bond lengths If we do I'm sure he will bring it up in the lecture as we have not gone over how to find bond lengths yet. We were only told about one that was observed from C-C.

I don't think we have to know how to calculate bond lengths since this was never mentioned. It just seems like he just wants us to know that double bonds are shorter than single ones.

In lecture we were told that those molecules that have resonance have a bond length that is in between that of a single and double bond length. Moreover, the general rule is that single bonds are bigger than double bonds.

We haven't been taught how exactly to obtain measurements for bond lengths as of now. Professor Lavelle specified the different lengths to prove that double and triple bonds have higher attraction and thus shorter lengths than single bonds, and the bonds for resonance structures have lengths between double and single bonds due to the attraction being evenly dispersed between all bonds of a resonance molecule.

Yes! I agree with you on the length of the resonance bond between molecules. According to my PLF the length of the bond is not singular or double bond size but rather in between those lengths.

Dr. Lavelle did not say anything about needing to know bond lengths so I doubt it

If we were required to know bond lengths, I think the values would be given to us to use in whatever calculations are required.

I don't think we need to know how to calculate specific bond lengths. I think all you need to know is that single bonds have longer bond lengths than double bonds which have longer bond lengths than triple bonds.
