Arrangement of Atoms

Postby Lilyana Villa 1J » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:37 pm

How is formal charge used to predict the arrangement of atoms in a molecule?

A molecule is most stable when all of the atoms have the lowest possible formal charge. If you think you have found the correct structure, check formal charges and if they are mostly 0 or +/-1 to 2, that is an indication that your structure is correct

Lewis structures with formal charges of each atom that are closest to 0 represent the lowest energy arrangement of the atoms and electrons within a molecule. So, the lowest formal charges of a molecule are typically more representative of the true nature of that molecule.

Molecules want to be in their most stable form. This is achieved when the individual atoms have their lowest formal charge.
