How come for these structures you draw the elements separately? For example in part b, the answer key shows K+ around a P -3 instead of lines connecting the elements, unlike previous questions that asked you to draw the lewis structures, such as 2B5. Draw the Lewis structure of (a) tetrahydridoborate ion.

Hi there,
I noticed in the first answer that ammonia is bracketed. From what I understand, ammonia is bracketed because it's a naturally-occurring molecule that has bonded to a single chloride molecule. In other words, no specific atom in the ammonia compound is chemically bound to chlorine. Rather, the entire ammonia atom is bound to it. Therefore, there is no single line that illustrates the bond between ammonia and chlorine. I'm not entirely sure if this is the reason behind the Lewis structure's appearance, but it's what I can infer from the image. I hope this makes sense! Let me know if you want any clarification :)

These bonds are polyatomic. It is made up of many atoms, or separate molecules. Each bracket is like a separate molecule, and the charges ultimately cancel out to become 0 charged.
For part b, K3P is polyatomic and is an ionic bond. It is made of many polyatomic ions.

How can we tell when the compound has an ionic bond when we are just given the formula? Should we just memorize the charges?
