Expanded octets

When drawing Lewis structures on the homework, I notices Sulfur structures forming multiple double bonding sites on the Sulfur atom, where the Sulfur atom would have 10 shared electrons. Is there a "max" amount of electron bonds an expanded octet atom can have?

The expanded octet needs open spots on the d orbital, which has a total of 10 electrons max. So I believe at most there would be 10 electrons added.

I think SF6 has Sulfur with 12 electrons, 10 electrons is not going to be the max number. I think it is more or equal to 12 electrons.
