Postby Johnathan Smith 1D » Sun Nov 03, 2019 3:41 pm

Are resonance structures just all the different ways to draw the lewis models of the compounds?

Yes, as long as they have the same overall charge as the molecule/ion.

Resonance is helpful in determining which lewis structure to use. By calculating each formal charge, you can find the most stable one.

Resonance structure help spread out the multiple bond properties throughout the whole structure, allowing us to find the most stable variation of the structure.

yes, basically. There can be a lot of possible ways to draw an molecule but the best drawing is the one with the lowest formal charge.

Does anyone have tips on how to start drawing the structures?
