Resonance Structures

Can someone clarify what resonance structures are?

Resonance structures are a set of two or more Lewis Structures that collectively describe the electronic bonding a single polyatomic species including fractional bonds and fractional charges

Basically, they’re Lewis structures that can be written in different ways and still he correct. It’s important to note that the actual structure is actually a hybrid between these bonds.

Resonance can be described as the delocalization of electrons in a molecule. The electrons help form bonds within the molecule that can be drawn in Lewis Structures.

There is more than one way to draw a lewis structure. For example the double bonds can move to another same element in the drawing.

Also resonance structures are used to determine the true most stable structure. So if multiple resonance structures contribute equally, the structure will be a hybrid of all the resonance structures. This is why sometimes if there's resonance, bond lengths will be between that of a single bond and a double bond since its a hybrid!

They help to stabilize the molecule.

They are compounds that could have multiple variations for their structures, therefore -- these structures have delocalized electrons that make a changing structure

Resonance structures are other possible equivalent lewis structures that show the delocalization of electrons without changing the position of the atoms.

Resonance structures are two or more forms of a molecule where the chemical connectivity is the same but the electrons are distributed differently around the structure.

Resonance structures are the different ways the bonds can be done on the same molecule.

For example if there is a double bond on 3 oxygens and a single bond on 1 oxygen, the resonance structure would be the different positions of the single and double bonds on the molecule.

Resonance structures essentially combine into a resonance hybrid. Each resonance structure describes how possible delocalized electrons may form bonds.

Resonance structures are alternate Lewis structures for a single compound. They're all correct and often just have double/triple bonds at different locations.

Resonance structures are simply alternate Lewis structures for a given ion or molecule.

Resonance structures are Lewis Structures for a compound that can alternate in regards to where their electrons are. Their structure stays the same but electrons are moved around.

Say one way to draw the lewis structure CO2 was written as, 0-C=O(with sets electrons above the carbon and Oxygen), then the example of its resonance structure would be O=C-O. It is the rearranging or redrawing of bonds that does not change the structure itself. Please note this is not the correct lewis structure for CO2.

They are structure with the same formal charges.
