octet v. expanded octet

Postby josmit_1D » Sun Nov 10, 2019 7:44 pm

can a lewis structure be drawn with both a octet structure and an expanded octet structure?

Although certain atoms can either have an octet or an expanded octet, I'm pretty sure they can only have one or the other at a given time.

You would not draw an expanded octet for a single atom. For a molecule, you would show an expanded octet by surpassing the octet rule such as an atom having 5 covalent bonds.

Its always one or the other. Elements like P,CL, and S typically break the octet rule

You don't physically draw the Lewis structure of an expanded octet bigger it just looks the same as a regular structure except for there are more bonds around the central atom.
