"2C.15 Two contributions to the resonance structure are shown below for each species. Determine the formal charge on each atom and then, if possible, identify the Lewis structure of lower energy for each species." How would we tell which lewis structure has lower energy based on the lewis structures and the formal charges?

The lewis structure that has more formal charges that are closer to zero are lower energy and more stable.

Hi Hana! You can find which Lewis structure is more stable by looking at the formal charges of each atom. If the formal charges of each atom are closer to zero and add up to the overall charge of the actual molecule/polyatomic ion, then it is the most similar to the actual structure of the molecule/polyatomic ion.
