Oxidation Number Rules

When I look up oxidation number, a lot of different rules come up. What we learned in class was just to see how different the electron distribution on an original atom is. But I'm wondering if I missed something.

For coordination compounds, it would be the hypothetical charge on the metal given the anions in the coordination complex.
