Formal charge and resonance

Postby 206189669 » Sat Dec 09, 2023 10:58 pm

If there are multiple resonance structures of a molecule, would some atoms be more favorable to take on a -1 or +1 charge? Does electronegativity play a factor into which resonance structures are more favored?

It is more favorable for the more electronegative atom to carry the negative charge.

I may be wrong but the higher the electronegativity, the more likely it is to carry on a negative charge but we should always aim to make the overall structure have a formal charge that is closest to 0
