During lecture we learned that some Lewis structures are better representations than others, and that formal charge can be used to figure out which structure is best. My question is when we should calculate formal charges. Do we always have to calculate formal charges and compare structures?
We should calculate formal charge when there's several resonance structures for a molecule and we need to find which resonance structure is the most stable, being the optimal resonance structure. We should calculate formal charges and compare structures, again, in order to find the most stable lewis structure.
When there are resonance structure you should find the formal charge to determine which structure is the most stable and therefore the ideal structure. You find the formal charge in order to compare them and find the most stable one. I hope that makes some sense
Going along with this, is it correct that whichever Lewis structure results in the most formal charges of zero is the most stable? In other words, how do you use the calculated Lewis structures to determine stability?
