Formal charge of ClO2-

Postby Isabella Barkett 1G » Sat May 12, 2018 11:34 am

Is the compound drawn as Cl-O-O or O-Cl-O?

I found a video that goes through the step by step process of identifying the formal charge and drawing the lewis structure for ClO2-

ClO2 is drawn O-Cl-O.

Also, just remember that the least electronegative element is the central one. In this case, Cl is less electronegative than oxygen.

The least electronegative element is the central atom in the molecule. Cl is less electronegative than oxygen, therefore it will be the central atom.
