hw 3.53

the question asks: Determine the formal charge on each atom in the following molecules. Identify the structure of lower energy in each pair.

I know how to determine the formal charge by using the formal charge equation but I'm not entirely sure how I would identify the structure with the lower energy in each pair? Does it have to do with the formal charge?

The structure with the formal charge closest to zero is the most stable, meaning it has the lowest energy. Hope that helps!

You would have to find the overall formal charge of each molecule, and then determine which one has a charge closest to zero. The charge closest to zero is the most stable (and thus, has the least energy)

the structure which has the lowest number of formal charges around the structure will be the most stable.
