### Oxidation Numbers

Can someone explain how an oxidation number is calculated, and how it differs from a formal charge? In what situation would one be used over the other?

Thanks!

### Re: Oxidation Numbers

An oxidation number is pretty much the positive charge on an element if it is positive, or the negative charge if it is negative. It represents the number of electrons lost (positive) or gained. (negative) An oxidation reaction in general refers to the loss of electrons, which is why positive oxidation numbers represent loss of electrons and the negative numbers represent a gain.
