Valence electrons

How many valence electrons does Mn has? Is the electrons in orbital 3s and 3p is the valence electrons of Mn? Why they are or not?

From my understanding, Manganese (Mn) would have 7 valence electrons: 2 from the electrons in the 4s orbital and 5 from the 3d orbital. I don't think you count the previous orbitals when considering valence electrons since that's already substituted by the adjacent noble gas, which is Argon. Those electrons up to Argon are not in the outermost shell. Therefore, they wouldn't be counted as valence electrons.

Mn would have 7 valence electrons. If you look at the configuration which is [Ar] 3d^5 4s^2. You can see that there is 7 electrons which could possibly be used to bond and since its in the 4th period. Since argon is a Nobel gas the electrons in those states/orbitals will not bond because it is already stable as it is. Hope this helps.
