Application of oxidation number

Postby JTijerina_4A » Mon Dec 02, 2019 2:46 pm

I know that formal charge is used to find the most stable lewis structure, what is the application of the oxidation number, is it at all related to the lewis structure?

Oxidation number is important for naming coordination compounds, where we would need to express the oxidation number of the transition metal cation in Roman numerals in parentheses after naming the metal cation. The oxidation number is also important because it contributes to the overall charge of the molecule. Oxidation number contributes to Lewis structure by expressing the electron density near an atom. You would need the oxidation number of a transition metal cation in order to determine its formal charge in a molecule.

Oxidation number is also useful when looking at redox reactions.

can someone quickly summarize how you find the oxidation number of an atom? is it the same as formal charge?
