### Sapling HW 9 Problem #6

For this question I am supposed to give the oxidative state of [Co (NH3)5 Cl] Cl. My question is, when trying to find the oxidative state, do we have to look at everything that has a charge, whether it is inside or outside? For example, do I take into account the Cl outside of the brackets or not?

Yup for oxidative number, we take into account the atoms and ions inside and outside of the coordination sphere.

Yeah! So basically, since this is a coordination compound and coordination compounds have a neutral charge, you need to use information both inside and outside of the brackets in order to ensure that the overall charge of the compound in zero! Since Cl has a -1 charge, make sure that the overall charge of what is contained within the brackets, [Co (NH3)5 Cl], is +1 to result in an overall charge of the compound equal to 0! Yes, you would have two take into account the Cl outside of the brackets. In this problem, the oxidative state of [Co (NH3)5 Cl] Cl will be 3+
