Lewis Dot Structure and Formal Charge

Postby Sonia Perez 1G » Tue Oct 27, 2015 7:57 pm

What is the most stable Lewis Dot Structure for N20? When i calculated the formal charge, the total charge for both structures was zero.

N::N::O (add electrons to form an octet) or

N:::N:O

nitrogen follows the octet rule and can't have more than 8 e-

Both structures are correct resonance structure, and the one with the triple bond is the preferred one because it is more stable. This is because Oxygen is more electronegative than nitrogen, and also because triple bonds are intrinsically more stable than double bonds.
