Hello everyone!
On the achieve homework, I noticed that we were given the names of the ions but not the structure. Do you think we will be required to know the structures of common ions or will they always be given in a test setting like midterm 2?
Thanks :)

I think we are going to be required to know some chemical formulas for some of the common ions and such, and with that their structure as well, but more complex ones shouldn't be a worry and would most likely be given.

I believe we are expected to know the formulas for polyatomic ions, and from that we can derive the lewis structures using the rules for making a lewis structure. Not actually sure though, so take the response with a grain of salt.

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm going with whether we had to know the molecular formulas for different compounds for Midterm 1 and I'm pretty sure that we'd be given the structures for ions (it may be good to know the ones for really common molecules like nitrate) on the exam, because we're not being tested on whether we've memorized the ionic structures.

Hi! I would definitely memorize the polyatomic ions just in case. I'm sure there are a bunch of study sets on quizlet:)
Re: achieve homework formal charge for nitrite/nitrate
Hi! I think if he ever gives us a test on these he would provide the formula, or some information for us to mathematically find the formula, but if they are very common ions, we will likely be using them a lot, and you honestly will probably just memorize them without even trying to!!

It is definitely a good practice to start trying to learn and memorize them, but Dr. Lavelle hasn't fully gone over naming mechanisms yet, so it is likely that for now, they will still be generally provided on tests. When we do formally learn naming mechanics, I would expect that we would need to memorize them.
