Formal Charge vs Polarity

Postby cherublina1l » Wed Oct 27, 2021 2:06 pm

Is formal charge in any way related to determining the polarity of a molecule? Or is it unrelated and is more specifically focused on the stability of a formation?

Formal charge is more just to figure out the total charge on a molecule is and the best Lewis structure to represent this molecule. Polarity is when a particularly electronegative atom binds to a less electronegative atom (with an electronegativity difference between 0.4 and 1.7) and creates positively and negatively charged regions in the molecule. Formal charge isn't used to find polarity, rather you'd need to look at the electronegativity of the atoms involved.

Formal charges are theoretical while polarity is a practical value. Formal charges describe where electrons should be in an electron shell model. It is the charge assigned to an atom in a molecule. Polarity is the separation of electric charges leading to molecule having electric dipoles.
