Exceptions

Postby Amal Aboumerhi 3E » Fri Nov 03, 2023 4:05 pm

When drawing Lewis structures how do we adopt the rules for the octet exceptions? Can someone explain how the octet rule effects drawing the structures?

Hi,
So generally we keep the number of electrons to 8 in Lewis structures but the exceptions being in the 3rd period/row (as they have the d-orbitals open) and in the 1st 4 elements as well as the Lewis acids and bases we learned. This affects the drawing because now we can have atoms without a full set of 8 electrons or over the limit of 8.

It changes the amount of bonds or free pairs that the element can hold and therefore changes the structure of the molecule to accommodate for this.
