What is the max expansion to the octet rule?

Elements in the third row of the periodic table and beyond can hold more than eight electrons in their valence shell due to the availability of d orbitals. Some examples include sulfur, phosphorus, and chlorine which can form compounds with 10, 12, or even 14 electrons in their valence shells. Expanded octets allow for more complex molecules and the octet rule is really just a guideline

According to the internet, the maximum seems to be 16. I don't think you need to know this number for this class, though.
