Atomic Structure
What is different in the atomic structure of atoms that can have an expanded octet? Is there something special about their atomic composition that allows them to have extra valence electrons?

some atoms are able to have an expanded octet due to the presence of the d-orbital. essentially elements past the 3p-orbital have access to the d-orbital that can also hold electrons.
