Hi, I was wondering how you know which element the unpaired electron goes on for Radicals. For example, how do you know whether the unpaired goes on the Cl or O in the molecule ClO (question 2C.5 part (a) in the 7th edition)? Thanks in advance!
The radical goes on the element where it will make the formal charge be 0 or closest to what your ion's charge is.
To determine which atom the unpaired electron goes on, you have to look at the formal charges and determine which atom it will make the formal charge be closest to 0
