Lewis acids and bases

Postby Jessica Helfond 2F » Sat Nov 03, 2018 10:14 pm

Could someone explain Lewis acids and bases? And how does it relate to coordinate covalent bonds?

A lewis base simply donates an electron within a coordinate covalent bond and a lewis acid accepts an electron in a coordinate covalent bond!

Bases give lone piars and acids receive lone pairs. Basces usually cotain NH3, F-, -OH and acids usually contain BF3, H+.

The Lewis base is an electron pair donor and so it donates it's lonely pair to a Lewis acid which usually has an emptru orbital to take those electrons. So the Lewis acid is a electron pair acceptor and a dative bond is formed.

As easy way to remember the difference between Lewis acids and cases is to connect the “a” in acid to the “a” in accept (acids accept electrons). Bases is then left to be the choice that donates electrons.
