Exceptions
How come atoms like Boron and Aluminum are exceptions to the octet rule? Is there an easy way to remember exceptions?

Re: Exceptions
Group 13 elements are often exceptions to the octet rule. Since these atoms need to gain 5 electrons to fulfill their octet rule, the octet rule is not reliable in Group 13. Furthermore, elements in Period 3 or later have an expanded valence shell by using their empty d orbital to hold additional electrons.

Re: Exceptions
The Octet Rule guideline only applies to period 2 elements because they must completely fill the second shell to achieve a stable state. The following elements on increasing period have the option to fill an additional d-orbital, so they are not confined to the Octet Rule.
