8 valence electrons
In class we said how elements P, S, and Cl can have exceptions to the octet rule, but I was wondering if any other elements could too, or should I just keep these three in mind?

Hydrogen and Beryllium are also exceptions to the octet rule because they often form incomplete octets (less than 8 valence electrons). Overall, I would just focus on P, S, Cl since they are the most common elements that make stable compounds with expanded octets.

Any of the elements in the third principal energy level and higher because they can accommodate more electrons with their d- orbitals. Other common examples are Si and Xe.

Dr. Lavelle mentioned the octet guideline only being applicable to a certain array of atoms...what are these atoms? Is it ones without d-orbitals?
