Octet rule exception

Postby JustinHorriat_4f » Sun Oct 27, 2019 4:52 pm

Professor Lavelle was talking about exceptions to the octet rule because they have a d-orbital, does this mean every atom with a d orbital has an exception to the octet rule. Also, do these exceptions affect the drawings of lewis structure so that there are more than 8 electrons around an atom?

The idea of Octet Rule expansion definitely has an effect whist drawing of the Lewis Dot Structures as an element (P, S, Cl) can have more than 8 electrons shared when they are combined with another element. This is so as these elements are extremely engaged in contributing to the making of various compounds.

Yes, I believe that all atoms with a d-orbital or higher have the ability to be an exception to the octet rule. These orbitals do allow for more than 8 electrons around a singular atom while drawing Lewis structures.
