Main group elements in period 3 and downward, radicals, and elements in a molecule with an odd number of electrons can all break the octet rule.

Elements with expanded electron shells (with electrons more than s2p6), lewis acids and bases, Group 13 elements, and radicals (compounds with unpaired electrons) are all exceptions to the octet rule.

The elements in period three and the subsequent periods along with the column 13 elements are exceptions to the octet rule

Any element past Phosphorus (including P) are an exception to the octet rule and can hold more than 8 electrons.

B and Al are also exceptions to this rule, as they must get 5 e- to get to an octet. However, since that is too many electrons they usually get 3 more e-
