2C.3

Postby Gabriella Bates 2L » Sat Nov 02, 2019 10:44 pm

In 2C.3 c, the book asked up to draw the Lewis Structure for chloric acid. The answer gave three structures, two of which had expanded octets. Would all of these be considered resonance structures, or is the final structure they gave (the one with lowest energy charge) technically correct? Thanks

The structure which has the most favorable layout in terms of formal charge would be the correct one, I believe.

Most favorable structure when doing a lewis structure is the one that has the formal charge closest to 0.

The most favorable structure should be the one with 0 formal charges on each atom. If it is impossible to have each atom with 0 formal charge, then the atoms with negative formal charge should be the ones with greatest electronegativity.
