Expanded Valence Shells
Why can only some elements in the 3rd period have an expanded valence shell?

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
I thought that all elements in or past the third period can have expanded octets because they have an empty d orbital where the extra electron can go.

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
I'm pretty sure that it is all of the elements in or past the third period can have expanded valence shells.

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
Atoms within the third period or past that can have expanded valence shells for electrons, since they have the d-orbitals.

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
Elements past the third period can have expanded valence shells due to the presence of a d-orbital.

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
Theoretically speaking, all atoms in the 3rd energy level can break the octet rule because of their unused 3d orbitals that can accommodate extra electrons; however, in nature, only a few atoms consistently do this.

Re: Expanded Valence Shells
Elements with d orbitals (period 3 and beyond), can have expanded valence shells.
