noble gas bonding

Postby EMurphy_2L » Mon Nov 04, 2019 7:27 pm

How would a noble gas ever bond? What type of bond is this?
In textbook question 2C.9, I don't understand how XeF2 could ever exist because F needs one electron each and Xe needs none. How are we supposed to draw this?

Noble gases like Xe have very low ionization energy so it can be ionized by the most electronegative atoms (fluorine). Xe also has empty d-block and I think this allows these bonds to exist, though it is rare.

Anything past group 3 can have an expanded octet, making it so that Xe can bond with F while exceeding an octet.

Noble gases like Xe can bond with other atoms since it has an expanded valence shell and thus have an empty d-orbital. This allows the atom to add more electrons into that d-orbital.
