Homework Problem 2.C.3

Postby Jasmine 2C » Tue Nov 05, 2019 12:13 pm

Can someone tell me how to solve this problem?
Draw the Lewis structure, including typical contributions to the resonance structure (where appropriate, allow for the possibility of octet expansion, including double bonds in different positions), for (a) periodate ion; (b) hydrogen phosphate ion; (c) chloric acid; (d) arsenate ion.

I didn’t draw out all the resonance structures, but you would just change the location of the double bonds in order to draw all of them out.

To go about solving all of these, you would first draw a structure that obeys the octet rule, and then use double bonds to lower the formal charges to as close to zero as they can be. Then draw resonance structures for all of them.
