Naming molecules

Postby Prasanna Padmanabham 4I » Tue Nov 05, 2019 6:48 pm

For the midterm, do you think we need to know how ions are named? For example in HW problem 2C.3, they gave the name of the ion/molecule (instead of the molecular formula) and asked us to draw a Lewis structure.

Do you think that's how the midterm is going to be or do you know if we will get a molecular formula?

If we need to know how to molecules are named, can some please direct me towards any good websites, videos or pictures? Or if you could please share memorization techniques/rules that would be great too!

For this midterm, I believe that we don't need to know how to name molecules and that the chemical formula will be provided unless it's something like CO2 or H2O.

I don't think Lavelle expects us to know how which molecular formula corresponds to which molecular name but I think starting to look at a list of common polyatomic ions (there's only around 10-20 of them) and studying prefixes and suffixes would be a good place to start studying.
