Expanded Octet

Postby Labiba Sardar 2A » Wed Nov 06, 2019 9:59 am

Can someone please explain the process of drawing Lewis structures for atoms with an expanded octet? I really don't understand how to draw the structures for these molecules. Do you just put all the single bonds in and lone pairs on the outside atoms, and then draw double bonds until you've used up all the electrons you have in total?

Basically you are going to first fulfill the octet rule for all the atoms in the compound. I personally like to add my extra lone pairs to the central atom in order to form the expanded octet first then check the formal charge for each of the atoms. That way you know if you need double or triple bonds

Also make sure the amount of electrons in the central atom allows for the formal charge to be equal to zero! Since the central element in a molecule is almost always the least electronegative of the molecule, it will usually have a formal charge of zero or a positive value.
