Does Al not have access to the d orbitals? why?

Aluminum does not have an expanded octet. Since it is a group 3 atom it sometimes violates the octet rule by having less than 8 valence electrons when bonded.

Aluminum does not have an expanded octet. Aluminum is an exception just like boron where it can be octet deficient. Just like in BF3 boron is stable with only six electrons, in AlCl3 aluminum also does not fill an octet.

Al can not have an expanded octet because only elements Phosphorus and onward can have more than 8 electrons. However, Al is one the exceptions to the octet rule in the case that it can have less than 8 electrons.

As everyone else has said, Aluminum can have less than the octet rule. Boron is another important element that can have less than the octet rule.

Atoms that can have an expanded octet start with P on the periodic table and continue onwards. Aluminum is before P, so it can't have an expanded octet.
