Octet Exception

Postby Wilson 2E » Sun Nov 10, 2019 1:00 pm

Is the expansion of the octet rule limited only to an element's d-block, or can the f-block store electrons too? Any examples of this happening?

I believe the f-block can also have an expanded octet rule because any element in the 3rd period or below can have an extended octet and all elements with an f block are below the 3rd period.

Any element in and after the third period can have an expanded octet due to them having more than just p-orbitals.

Any element below and including the 3rd period is able to have expanded octet. The first two periods cannot have expanded octets because they only go up to the p block.

From my understanding, you really only have to worry about the octet rule with 2nd period elements (mainly N, O, F). As others mentioned, once you reach 3rd period elements, d-orbitals can accommodate extra electrons.

The octet rule is really only applicable to atoms in the s-orbital or in the periods 1 or 2. After the d-orbital is introduced, the expanded octet rule is applicable.

I believe the f-block can store electrons too since the octet exception applies to those after the third period.

There is a couple exceptions including some with an expanded octet like Phosphorus and Sulfur. Also other elements have a smaller octect like Hydrogen.

Basically anything below period 2 can have an expanded octet, due to their capability of being able to hold more electrons in their D-orbitals or F-orbitals. Hope this helps.
