Limit to octet exception

Postby Maaria Abdel-Moneim 2G » Wed Nov 04, 2020 1:04 pm

I just have a sort of hypothetical question regarding the octet exception. Is there a limit to the amount of extra electrons the octet exception atoms can hold? Is it just the amount of electrons in the d-orbital?

I believe it depends on the number of valence electrons. For example, P can only hold 5 bonds due to its 5 valence electrons. The d orbital allows it to have more than an octet but it cannot exceed past its 5 valence electrons.

I believe it is just the amount of electrons that can be held in the d-block which would be a max of 10 electrons. There are other blocks which possibly could contain more electrons but I don't think we will go over that.
