Octet Exceptions and Expanded Octet Calculation

Postby Joshua Eidam 2A » Fri Dec 11, 2020 12:57 am

Hi, I am a little confused as to where exactly the cutoff is for elements that are able to have more than 8 electrons in their valence shell. Also, I am confused about how to calculate what the central atoms expanded octet is when given a lewis structure or just a formula?

Hi! p-black atoms from n=3 and higher can have extended octet since they have the d-orbital in valence shell that can fit additional electrons.

Elements in the 2p must have an octet. The elements H,He,Be,Li never have an octet and B and Al usually have an incomplete octet. But as the person said above, elements in the 3p can expand their octets.

Hi!
The main elements we definitely have to know for this class are P, S, and Cl. Other than that, anything with a d-orbital can have an expanded valence.
