What is a radical, and what is its importance?

Radicals are atoms with at least one unpaired electron. Since electrons don't tend to like to be outside of their pairs, radicals are very unstable.

A radical has is also important in biological situations because they are so unstable that they will break apart DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.

radicals are very unstable and reactive and can damage cells/dna and are important in combustion and atmospheric chemistry
