Ligand

Can anyone remind me what a ligand is?

Hi Emma!
A ligand is a species that donates both of its e- in order to form a coordinate covalent bond. This can be a neutral molecule like ammonia (NH3) or an ion like Cl- .

A ligand is an ion or molecule that binds to a central atom with a coordinate covalent bond to form a complex. If you remember the reference to Lewis acids and bases, a ligand is the Lewis base that donates a lone pair of electrons.

A ligand is an ion or molecule attached to a metal atom by coordinate covalent bonding (a coordinate covalent bond is a bond where the two bonding electrons come from one species / compound / molecule).

A ligand is an ion/molecule that attaches to a central atom with a coordinate covalent bond, forming what is known as a complex. A ligand is a Lewis base, means that it can donate its electron pairs. Some examples of ligands are: H20, NH3, Cl-, OH-, CO, and CN-.

Hi! Ligands also are electron-rich species that contain extra electrons/electrons in general (for example, Lewis Bases can be ligands). Cl- was an example discussed in class, as it has a full valence shell of 8 electrons. Another example from class was NH3, which has a lone pair of electrons that it can donate. These extra electrons are usually donated to the central metal cation in coordinate compounds.

A ligand is an atom that donates its own 2 electrons to an atom to form the bond rather than having one electron from each atom

Ligands donate electron pairs and act as lewis bases. They also form complexes with cations and usually fill the complexes unfilled orbitals. Ligands are useful in pharmaceuticals and drug treatments as well as chemotherapy. Hope this helps!

Hello! A ligand is any atom/ molecule which is attached to a central atom in a coordination/ complex compound. Ligands tend to act like Lewis bases by donating electron pairs and the central atom acts as the Lewis acid by being the electron pair acceptor. I hope this helps!

A ligand is a Lewis base (a molecule that donates electrons to a Lewis acid to form a coordinate covalent bond) attached to a central metal atom in a complex

It attaches to the center atom in a coordination compound.

A ligand is a molecule/ion that will form a coordinate covalent bond (donate an electron pair) to a central transition metal to create a coordination complex. Hope this helps!

A ligand is any atom or molecule attached to a central atom. A ligand is usually a metallic element, in a coordination or complex compound.

I don't know if this is helpful but Dr. Lavelle started the discussion about ligands on Monday of Week 8 and that lecture was super helpful to me when trying to understand ligands!

Yes a ligand is an ion or molecule (functional group) that binds to a central atom to form a coordination complex.

A ligand could be an atom or molecule that binds directly to a central atom. It is also an electron donor species.

A ligand has a lone pair that donates the entirety of the lone pair to another atom rather than sharing the bond covalently (1e- each).

A ligand is anything (ion, molecule, etc) that is connected to the central metal atom with a coordinate covalent bond. It's a pretty broad term. ^^

Hi! A ligand is basically just an atom or molecule that is bonded to a transition metal in coordination compounds.

A ligand is a lewis base(lone pair donor) that forms coordinate covalent bonds with a transition metal cation (lewis acid, accepts lone pair).

Ligands are ions that form coordination compounds when bound to a central atom. In fact, they usually serve a biological purpose as we have discussed during our lectures.

Here's a video with examples to get a stronger idea of what ligands are! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=011Bj5USal8

Ligands are ions or molecules that have a lone pair and typically attach themselves to transition metals which are highly positively charged.

Yeah a ligand binds to a metal cation because it has a lone pair.
